Workshop on “Smart Grid Vietnam - Japan” (08/01/2020)

Renewable energy development is critical for Vietnam to secure energy in a long-term perspective.  Smart  grid is  one  of  technologies  which  will  help  renewable  energy to  be feasible  and  the  power  industry  to  manage  electricity  supply  efficiently  and  enhance security and reliability of supply.

Development of renewable energy and smart grid has been significantly encouraged by the government as regulated in the National Master Plan for Power Development for the 2011- 2020 Period with the Vision to 2030 (so-called Power Development Master Plan VII), the Scheme on Development of Intelligent Power Grid, and the Development Strategy of Renewable Energy of Vietnam by 2030 with a Vision to 2050. Lately, the revised Power Development Master Plan VII promoted the use of renewable sources for power generation while requiring that the smart grid technology be applied in the power transmission process. Accordingly, obtaining  appropriate  and  useful  information  on  both  renewable  energy  and  the  smart grid technology would be important to Vietnam to achieve the national targets.

The cooperation between Vietnam and Japan is a traditional and long-term one, especially in the field of energy. In the process of modernization, the Vietnamese electricity industry has gained valuable experience from Japan as well as has the opportunity to mutually share experience with Japan in promoting a competitive electricity market in Vietnam. In the framework of Vietnam - Japan cooperation on energy, the Vietnam - Japan Smart Grid Workshop is an annual activity organized with the help of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI).
