Study and assessment of climate change impacts on power demand, generation and transmission
MSc. Nguyen Minh Bao - Institute of Energy, Ministry of Industry and Trade

Abstract:
Climate change is caused by greenhouse effect, leading to the increase of atmosphere temperature, rainfall, extreme weather phenomena, floods and typhoons, rising sea level, and thus has serious impacts on several economy and living activities, especially on the natural environment, water resources, agricultural production, public health and infrastruture, including the power sector. Therefore, the survey and impact assessment of climate change on the power sector and recommendation of mitigation solutions are among the most important tasks of the National Target Program on Climate Change Mitigation by the MInistry of Industry and Trade.
To perform the assignment, this study has employed the bottom-up methodology using LEAP model (Long-Range Energy Alternatives Planning System), focusing on assessing the impacts of climate change on the production, transmission and use of electric power for household cooling.
Based on the medium scenario of climate change and rising sea level, the base case of the National Power Development Plan VII and case studies, the impacts are quantified and compared to the Base Case (assuming that there is no climate change).
