GMS delegates share Sustainable Power Development experience at International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) (25/06/2012)

International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) is the leading global network on best practice in the application of impact assessment tool to provide information for decision making process regarding policies, programs, plans and projects.

 
Established since 1980, IAIA brings together researchers, practitioners, and users of various types of impact assessment from all over the world. IAIA involves people from many disciplines and professions. IAIA has more than 1,600 members from many sectors, areas, including planners, managers and policy makers, university and college teachers and their best students, from more than 120 countries. IAIA activities seek to (1) develop approaches and practices for comprehensive and integrated impact assessment, (2) improve assessment procedures and methods for practical application, (3) promote training of impact assessment and public understanding of the field, (4) provide professional quality assurance by peer review and other means, and (5) share information networks, timely publications, and organize professional meetings, especially annual conferences.

The 2012 Annual Conference of the International Association of Impact Assessment (IAIA) was held in Porto, Portugal from 26 May to 6 June with financial assistance from Asian Development Bank (ADB). This is the first time, the conference were attended by seven government representatives from the GMS countries. With the theme 'Energy Future - The Role of Impact Assessment', this annual conference  provided an opportunity for representatives from GMS countries to introduce to a global audience on new approaches which have been used in integrating environmental sustainability into energy sector planning.

The presentations from GMS countries at the conference include 01 report from Cambodia and 02 reports from Vietnam namely “Strategic Environmental Assessment for National Power Development period 2011 - 2020 ­(PDPVII), by IE and ADB” and “Initiative of Biodiversity Corridor in Quang Nam Province”, and 01 report from Cambodia.

 
 

This conference is a good opportunity for the GMS delegations from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Viet Nam to learn global best practices of impact assessment method on nature, society, health, culture and so on. At this forum, IE’s representatives got a chance to meet colleagues with similar professional interests and interesting activities, share experience as well as make networking with experts of International Association for Impact Assessment.
